If you know Pigeon Hill, you know we love good beer, good food, and giving back to our community—and this May, we’re combining all three. We’re kicking off Cinco de Mayo a day early with a celebration at the Brewer’s Lounge, and you’re invited!
Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 4th from 1:00–4:00 PM and join us for a fundraiser supporting the Angel Luis and Connie Navarro Legacia Fund. We’ve got a packed afternoon planned:
Mi Gente Beer Release – We’re proud to be part of this giveback beer project (more on that below!).
Suenos Car Club – Check out some amazing vehicles—and if you’ve got a sweet ride, bring it along for photo ops and exposure!
Lotería Contest – Think Mexican bingo, but with prizes and way more fun.
Dance Lesson – Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just willing to give it a shot, we’ll have a dance instructor to get the party moving.
Navarro’s Tamales – Yes, they’re as delicious as they sound, and yes, you’re going to want more than one.
This event isn’t just about food, fun, and festivities (though there will be plenty of all three)—it’s about supporting a great cause. Using Mi Gente as our giveback beer all month long, we’re excited to help the Angel Luis and Connie Navarro Legacia Fund, which makes a difference right here in our community.
The Angel Luis and Connie Navarro Legacia Fund was officially founded on December 12, 2022, just before the passing of Connie Navarro. December 12 holds deep cultural significance as the celebration of the Virgen de Guadalupe, a date revered by many Latinos both locally and abroad.
The fund began as a birthday gift—Connie’s daughter, Angelita, started the idea in 2021 in honor of her mother’s 80th birthday. With Connie’s full support and contribution, the two of them ensured that the fund was inaugurated with a $10,000 donation before Connie passed.
Housed at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, the fund was designed with three powerful goals:
Scholarships for Latino students in Muskegon County pursuing higher education or trade schools.
Support for Latino entrepreneurs and local businesses.
Funding for Spanish-speaking community initiatives in the area.
The fund reflects the lifelong dedication of Angel Luis and Connie Navarro, who were tireless advocates for Muskegon County’s Latino community. Their journey began in the fields of Mears, Michigan, where they met and later married in 1964. From there, their impact grew:
They launched “Hora con Navarro”, the first local Spanish-language TV show.
They started “Magia Latina”, Muskegon’s first Spanish radio program.
In 1991, they founded Latinos Working for the Future, still active today as the county’s only Latino nonprofit.
In 1978, they opened Navarro’s Grocery, a cultural hub that later evolved into Navarro’s Mexican Take Out, now a beloved Muskegon staple.
Their legacy continues not only through these institutions but also through the Muskegon County Latino Festival, now entering its fourth year, and the Legacia Fund that supports future generations of Latino students, entrepreneurs, and leaders.
Muskegon County residents can apply for support from the Navarro Fund year-round through the Community Foundation. All requests must benefit local Latino initiatives or provide scholarships and entrepreneurial support for those in the community.
This isn’t just a fundraiser—it’s a chance to be part of something bigger.
Mi Gente (which translates to “My People”) is more than just a beer. It’s a collaboration project originally developed by City Built Brewing in Grand Rapids as a way for breweries across the country to support Hispanic-centric causes. Any brewery can brew Mi Gente, put their own spin on it, and use the proceeds to give back. Every Mi Gente release is a little different depending on who brews it and where it’s served—but the heart of the project remains the same: celebrate heritage, foster connection, and pay it forward.
We’re honored to be part of the Mi Gente movement—and even more honored that we get to re-release our version during a celebration that supports such an incredible fund. So when you raise a glass of Mi Gente on May 4th, you’re not just enjoying a great beer—you’re supporting great people.
Want to learn more about Mi Gente? Head on over here!
While we’re talking about fundraising, we want to take a minute to say: thank you. Over the past year, your support has helped us raise money for some incredible causes through our events, giveback beers, and POS (point-of-sale) roundups.
Throughout April, your generosity has helped us raise money for Gillette Nature Center, supporting education programs, trail maintenance, new exhibits, and school outreach at PJ Hoffmaster State Park. Thanks to you, more kids (and adults) will get to learn, explore, and connect with nature.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past year, you’ve helped us support:
Breast cancer research through Van Andel Institute
Every beer you bought, every dollar you rounded up, every event you attended—it all added up to real support for organizations doing real, meaningful work. We couldn’t do it without you, and honestly, we wouldn’t want to.
If you’re free on May 4th, we hope you’ll come celebrate Cinco de Mayo with us, sip on a Mi Gente, grab a tamale (or two), and help us raise money for the Angel Luis and Connie Navarro Legacia Fund. Great beer, great people, great cause—what could be better?
